MacAusland's Mill was started in 1870 by Fred MacAusland. At first it was a sawmill and a gristmill. In 1902 MacAusland, despite the locals thinking him crazy, decided to change to a woolen mill.

To start they produced yarns and in 1932 they began producing their famous wool blankets. Today the mill is still producing yarns and blankets with historic, old-fashioned machinery.

The wool comes from the Atlantic region.  It is washed, dried, spun on the fantastic antique machines in an old wooden building/barn.

All the blankets are preshrunk, brushed - napped - to make them fluffy and warm, then they are cut and hemmed. I get elderly visitors at the market who tell me they have blankets from when their parents took their wool to the mill for blankets.  All those years later the blankets are still in mint shape.

Visiting the mill is like stepping back in time, however, the products are timeless, forever practical, durable, and beautiful.   This is still a family run, humble, friendly business.  Definitely worth a visit if on the Island!

Fibrepalooza is very proud to sell MacAusland 100% Wool blankets and yarns.  I have many elderly people who come to my booth sharing their stories of going to MacAusland's with their parents, taking their raw fibre over to be made into blankets and/or yarn.  Many comment on how they still have the blankets after 30-50 years and they are in great shape and as warm as ever.  I do the same with my sheep's fibre - take it to be made into blankets and yarn.

I have several lap, double, and queen blankets of various colors and various colors in yarn, here at the shop, however, I can order whatever the customer wants.  These products are so popular and I spread my fibre to many places so I have opened a wholesale account with them.  The yarn is awesome for knitting and knitting and felting.  MacAusland's use few chemicals so the yarn still smells 'real', woolie.  (a very pleasant smell).  It felts up very quickly and is very soft.

If one ever travels to the Island it is well worth the stop to MacAusland's.  The Mill is quite an historic site, the people are incredibly friendly and helpful.  A very fun, educational attraction.
